Here we are into the spring season, quickly approaching the summer months. What does this mean for our pets? - Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.
(1) Fleas - The flea is not only a nuisance, it can also be a host for tapeworms and other parasites. Its bites are irritating to both humans and animals, and it can be difficult to eradicate once it takes up residence in your home.
(2) Ticks - Many diseases are caused by tick bites. Depending on the type of tick, a bite may result in Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, Tick Paralysis or Ehrlichiosis.
(3) Mosquitoes - Heartworm is a potentially lethal parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Approximately 240,000 dogs test positive for heartworm disease each year. It has been found in all fifty states.
There are preventative steps that can be taken to help control these parasites. The adult flea you see on your pet is only a small portion (5%) of the total flea population. The parts of the flea life cycle you don’t see (eggs – 50%, larvae – 35%, pupae – 10%) are the biggest obstacles in preventing an infestation. There are several medications used to control fleas that target different phases of the flea life cycle. There are several different types of ticks. All are very hearty creatures and all may carry disease. Stop in and talk with one of our knowledgeable staff members about the different products we recommend for flea and tick prevention.
